Our name, “Kyumaco,” translates into English as “steel company”. While we started as a steel retail company and have since expanded into other areas, our name still perfectly reflects the strength of the relationships we form with our partners.

In Mumbai, we started our first venture, tapping into the fabric industry with a connection to a factory manufacturing diverse textiles. Our workspace was in the humble setting of a well-known coffee shop, where we hustled to create a global network by sending samples and nearly clinching deals.

Navigating Challenges: 2014-2015

In 2015, we married and continued to pursue our mission. Soon, we found an opportunity that shifted our focus to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With roots already in the DRC, it was a natural pivot.

Overcoming Financial Hurdles: 2016

Despite financial constraints, we sold personal assets and secured loans to step into the DRC’s market. In 2016, we laid the groundwork for Kyumaco in Lubumbashi by registering the company, scouting for agencies, and establishing a foothold in trading in Africa.

A Period of Real Growth: 2016 Onward

Our early days were filled with rigorous market research, door-to-door sales pitches, and the challenge of introducing new products amidst logistical hurdles. Still, this phase honed our business skills and expanded our understanding of the market dynamics in the DRC.”

Our Founders

Syed Faiz Hussaini and Nausheen Faiz Hussaini began their entrepreneurial journey in 2014, a year before their marriage, with a mission to start a business.

Despite initial setbacks in the textile industry, they pivoted to importing lubricants and later diversified into the cement and steel sectors in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Their tenacity and decision-making led to the expansion of their retail and wholesale operations, exemplifying their adaptability and determination to succeed.

Laying foundations in Lubumbashi

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, we continued to tackle the daunting task of establishing Kyumaco from the ground.
 
Our first big break was supposed to come from a lubricant deal, but it fell through due to matters outside of our control. This was another setback, yet a valuable lesson in resilience and the importance of self-reliance.
 
Despite early struggles, including a failed first retail venture, we kept pushing, learning from each interaction and slowly building a reputation for reliability and quality service.

Growth and Expansion

Our breakthrough came with cement. With just $10,000, we went to the border during political unrest to secure a crucial supplier relationship. This was a risky move, but it more than paid off, leading to significant sales and opening our path to the steel industry.
  
Our strategy of counter-market movement—expanding when others were retracting—allowed us to grow rapidly. Next, we opened three retail stores in quick succession, which paid dividends and helped us establish our presence in the market.

Along with steady financial growth, this period also solidified Kyumaco’s reputation as a versatile, dependable player in Lubumbashi’s trading sector.
